FAW-Volkswagen widens UBTECH humanoid trials from inspection to factory logistics
Short answer: Chinese carmaker FAW-Volkswagen, a joint venture of FAW Group and Volkswagen Group, is expanding its trials of UBTECH humanoid robots from vehicle inspection into logistics, ASSEMBLY magazine reported on 26 October. The two companies signed a strategic cooperation agreement on 8 October to jointly develop, test and demonstrate humanoid applications for factory logistics and smart manufacturing, according to Interesting Engineering and TechRepublic.
The deal builds on earlier work at FAW-Volkswagen's Qingdao factory. Interesting Engineering reports that the partners began working together in July 2024, when UBTECH's Walker S was tested on bolt tightening, component installation and parts handling, and that the Walker S Lite was later used for vehicle quality-inspection training connected to the plant's automation control system.
What the agreement leaves out is significant. ASSEMBLY, Humanoids Daily and TechRepublic all note that it does not say which robot model will be used, how many robots are involved, which of FAW-Volkswagen's plants will host the logistics demonstrations, or when routine use could begin. ASSEMBLY points out one argument for humanoids in logistics: they could use flow racks and workstations built for people without the factory being redesigned.
